If you sell, transfer or purchase a vehicle that does not yet have a safety certificate, you will need an RWC to complete the title transfer through the Queensland Transport Authority. Without a safety certificate, the Department of Transport cannot permit the transfer of ownership, and the car may be deregistered. A safety certificate is also required for a new registration after the registration has expired.

A mobile roadworthy Logan examination verifies that the car is safe for use on the road and that essential components meet a set standard. It covers:

• Vehicle identification numbers, such as the VIN, chassis and engine number
• Steering, suspension and brake systems
• Vehicle structure
• Lights and reflectors
• Tyres and wheels
• Seats and seatbelts
• Front and rear windows, front wipers and washers
• Other safety-related components on the chassis, engine or body

Only approved inspection stations (AIS), which can include service stations, garages or workshops approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, are permitted to issue QLD safety certificates.

The Certificate of Inspection does not examine the mechanical reliability or overall condition of a vehicle. It does not cover:

• Whether the car is in good mechanical condition
• Non-safety extras such as the air conditioner, rear window wipers and rear window demister
• Whether the items inspected keep working afterwards. Things like a brake light may stop working after the inspection.

It depends on who is selling the car. Certificates from licensed motor dealers are valid for three months or 1,000 kilometres from the date of issue, whichever comes first. All other sellers' certificates are valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres.

Within those limits you can register an unregistered vehicle with the same safety certificate before transferring the registration. You need a new safety certificate each time you sell a car, as a single certificate can only be used for one transfer.

Provide your safety certificate, the required purchase/transfer paperwork and the fee to the Queensland Department of Transport, which will transfer and update the ownership records. You must take your roadworthy certificate to the Department within its validity period.

If your vehicle doesn't meet Queensland Transport standards, our assessors will give you a rejection report explaining the specific problems and the fixes needed to pass. Address every issue listed, then book a time with us to re-inspect the car. A re-inspection can be done up to 14 days after the first inspection; after that, the report lapses and a new inspection is required.
